The Hurricanes got off to the best possible start in the 2015 Super Rugby competition by getting a win in South Africa 22-8 over the Lions.
The Johannesburg-based side scored the first try of the match, after a Beauden Barrett penalty for the Hurricanes, when wing Ruan Combrinck scored after sustained pressure. Leading 5-3, the home side should have put on more points in the first but ace goal kicker Marnitz Boshoff missed three penalty goals which proved to be crucial in the outcome of the match. Barrett struck a second penalty to regain the lead before halfback TJ Perenara scored from a dubious Jason Woodward pass to score and give the Hurricanes an 11-5 halftime lead.
After the break, Barrett kicked to more penalties to Boshoff's one, before Hurricanes wing Matt Proctor scored the decisive try in what would be the last play of the match for a 22-8 road win.
The Hurricanes will play the Bulls in their match of the season in Pretoria next Saturday morning.
Hurricanes 22 (TJ Perenara, Matt Proctor tries; Beauden Barrett 4 pens) beat Lions 8 (Ruan Combrinck try; Marnitz Boshoff pen). Halftime: 11-5.
