Perhaps the All Blacks greatest ever centre is out of the final test against England in Hamilton next weekend with a broken thumb and likely won't be back for the rest of the Super Rugby season.
This poses an interesting dilemma about his replacement in both teams. Let's look at the All Blacks for a start. For me there are three options:
1. Malakai Fekitoa
The talented but still very raw youngster could get the nod. He has questions on defence however and will the closeness of the previous two tests, he might be better to come off the bench as in Auckland a fortnight ago.
2. Ryan Crotty
He's more of a second five-eighth but he'll do the basic right and will play his heart out. The best option I think.
3. Ma'a Nonu (Crotty at second five-eighth)
This could also work with Nonu having had a plenty of time in the position in the past.
What about Smith's replacement at the Hurricanes. I have a couple of options here also:
1. Alapati Leiua (Tim Bateman at second)
This is the likely scenario. Leiua has played most of his Super Rugby career at wing or at centre so it's a no brainer really.
2. James Marshall
He's really the only other possible replacement in light of the cover at wing and fullback in the squad. But, it's a long shot.
What do you think?
