It was a match which could only be defined as the Hurricanes at their best as the home side went about thrashing the two-time defending champion Chiefs at Westpac Stadium 45-8 on Saturday evening.
Chiefs loosie Liam Squire got the scoring in the match underway with an early try but from then on it was a Hurricanes field day especially from broken play where the back three of Andre Taylor, Julian Savea and Cory Jane had their way with a hapless Chiefs defence.
Savea set up Taylor for an epic Hurricanes try from long range before the big man scored one himself, the first of two, to get the flow of points going. Prop Ben Franks, flanker Jack lam and replacement number 8 Brad Shields also dotted down in the game.
This was the Hurricanes at their absolute devastating best and with a performance like that, its hard to believe the criticism they were taking from the rugby fraternity at the beginning of the season. The playoffs are a very real possibility for the most exciting team in Super Rugby.
Hurricanes 45 (Julian Savea 2, Andre Taylor, Ben Franks, Jack Lam, Brad Shields tries; Beauden Barrett pen, 6 con) beat Chiefs 8 (Liam Squire try; Gareth Anscombe pen). Halftime: 21-8.
